Describing Photos

1. In the first photo there is a girl in a field hanging up a line of clothes to dry on a ladder. The ladder is leaning on the power line, even though in reality this wouldn't be possible. In the background, you can see a group of birds flying and the power line continuing into the distance. In the mid ground, there seems to be a barn or just a red house. More in the foreground, there is the woman and the pile of clothes. The focus is on the woman at first, and then your eye follows the power line back into the distance. The photo is bright and shows a rainbow in the back, conveying a warm and peaceful feeling. The picture makes me think about earlier time period, or just a more rural area, where having a washer and dryer was taboo, or only the rich had them. Based on the many different types of clothes, shes probably doing laundry for a whole family. Knowing the artist and what he said in the video about the red house, this scene probably takes place in his home of Sweden.

2. This photo might have been taken at some lake or pond that likely had a bank. It's an image of a man canoeing through the body of water, which turns to broken glass at the end where he is standing. The dirt in front of him looks completely dry, with a few dead fish at the end. This could be representative of drought. In the background, you can see the span of the trees and the water the man had already traveled. There is a trail of where the water was 'broken' and wispy clouds in the sky. In the mid ground, there is the man on the canoe, where the shards of the mirror begin appearing. In the foreground are the bigger shards of mirror, the dirt, ad the dead fish. The attention is focused on the man and the broken glass, and your eyes follow his trail towards the background. The whole idea of the photo might be based off of the idea of the reflection of water, which is why the shards are of a mirror. The photographer mainly uses geometric shapes to capture the viewer. The photo is very vivid.

3. This picture doesn't so much have a foreground and a mid ground. In the center of the image, there is a man punching himself in the face, while the background is just a brownish-grey wall. This was done on purpose to emphasize the pushed in face of the man. The face is being pushed in like a pillow, or a whoopy cushion. The photo is very expressive of the anger that the man might feel towards himself. This picture conveys and makes me think about what others feel on the inside portrayed in an obscure way. The photographer mainly uses the form of the face to create the scene and the emotions of the image.

4. In this image, there is a large fish underwater in a lake, while on the surface there is a little island with a red house sitting on it. All of this is in the center of the image, while in the back there is a small boat and various trees. The viewers attention is focused on the fish, and then moves up to the house on the little island. The photo is very surreal and bright. The photographer mainly uses the blown up proportion of the fish to elicit the wanted effect from his viewers. Looking deeper, knowing the photographers background, it is likely this takes place in Sweden because of the color of the house. The photo creates wonder and reminds me of the different kinds of large fish stories, like the loch ness monster.

5. This photo takes place somewhere up north, apparent because of the frozen lake. In this image, there is a man in the foreground holding a chainsaw and a sled full of fish that he cut out of the ice. In the background, there is a beautiful pink sunset, particularly on the right side. The rest of the sky looks dark and stormy. You can also see the hole next to him where he cut out one of the fish. The viewers attention is focused on the man at first. Your eyes follow the string on his back, to the fish. From there, your eyes move across the image and follow the trail of the sled. The image is a little dark, sticking to a particular cool color palette. It makes me think of a twist on ice fishing.

6. This image takes place in a field on a stormy night. In the background, there is a bundle of beautiful stars and dark clouds coming in from the right and left sides. There are also hints of mountains in the back. In the mid ground, there is a man in a night robe and slippers with a glass of water walking from one brightly lit door to another. The door on the left had papers coming out of it and the door on the right has stickers on the door and a lamp outside by it. I infer that this is probably a father bringing a glass of water to his child before he goes to sleep. In the foreground of the image, there is grass and tiny little flowers. The attention is focused on the man and the doors because of how brightly lit they are in comparison to the rest of the image. The picture makes me think about when I was little. The photographer uses the colors and the doors to get his story across.

7. In this photo, there are giant boots in the mid ground of the photo with a man riding them. You can tell that this is during either sunrise or sunset. While the boots are the focus of the image, you can follow the footprints of them back into the distance. This image was definitely composited with a few different pictures. This kind of reminds me of the nursery rhyme where an entire family lived in a shoe. In the background, we can see some grey clouds and the sun peeking out behind them. The ground and the dirt look kind of like farm land, like if there is something that is ready to plant. The lighting itself in the photo is kind of dim, probably due to the time of day.

8. In this photo, there is a man who was riding his bike and gets to a part in the road where the street turns to go completely straight down.

Ted Video Lesson

1.) What is photography?

2.) His first real passion was drawing.

3.) He thought photography was just about being in the right place at the right time.

4.) He felt that anyone could do that, so it inspired him to elevate his art and create something with realism that no one has seen before.

5.) The goal is to convey an impossible image realistically.

6.) Photo realism; something that looks like it could have been captured.

7.) He adheres to perspective, seamlessness and the amount of light in a setting.

8.) It's easier to create a place because you don't need to compromise the ideas in your head.

9.) He sketches his idea out first, then he combines the different photographs.

10.) The only thing that limits us is our imagination.
